With such an accessible arsenal, DmC is a game that oozes style and encourages experimentation.Įxperimentation serves a purpose too, as the more varied your attacks, the higher the score and the greater the likelihood of earning skill upgrades. A typical combo might see Dante start with a few sword attacks, launch enemies with a Demon uppercut, hit them with a barrage of Angel slices and finish them off with a shower of bullets. With Angel and Demon weapons accessed by holding the trigger buttons, the combo possibilities are seemingly endless.

Dante begins the game with his trusty sword Rebellion and pistols Ebony and Ivory, but soon gains access to numerous Angel and Demon weapons which offer contrasting light and heavy attacks. While the narrative may have been stripped back, the same can't be said for the combat system, which is more complex than ever, but crucially, never overwhelms. Excluding bosses, characters are kept to a minimum, which leads to a tightly-packaged narrative with some stellar vocal performances, even if it does get a little 'emo' at times.Īnd while the ending may be slightly predictable, and the cutscenes aren't as outrageous as they used to be, DmC is a game that benefits from removing all the baggage and keeping things simple. After receiving assistance from the mysterious Kat, Dante soon joins anti-Mundus 'terrorist' organisation The Order, led by his long-lost brother Vergil.Įxamining themes such as terrorism, propaganda and mind control, the DmC narrative is surprisingly enjoyable. In traditional Devil May Cry fashion, the game begins with Dante fighting off a horde of beasts sent by Mundus, the most powerful of the demons and the man behind the death of Dante's mother. The result is an immensely enjoyable action game with lots of memorable moments. Taking place in an alternate reality and with a new-look Dante, the Devil May Cry reboot is an opportunity for Heavenly Sword developer Ninja Theory to put its stamp on a franchise yet to really make its mark on the current generation of consoles.
